Model Trains, HO Scale – 9 Great Tips For a Successful Experience

Getting started with model trains can be an overwhelming experience. This is particularly true if your goal is to create a sophisticated layout from the beginning. But for myself, I’ve found that trying to do too much from the beginning overwhelms me and results in lack of progress. With model trains, HO scale is a great choice as a starter scale given the popularity of this scale among hobbyists and hobby shops. Here are nine hints from my personal experiences to help you in getting started with model trains, HO scale or any scale.
Hint 1: Use What Others Have Learned. It is easier and more efficient to learn from others than to start from scratch. That’s how people achieve so much in such little time. Be efficient with your time and especially with your money. Learn from the successes and failures of others. Why quickly spend money and time, only to be disappointed with the results?
Hint 2: Get going by balancing your need to learn from others (hint #1) with the need to get experience. The balance between learning before doing and getting started is different for each of us. Consider what works for best for you, but then consider starting just a bit sooner than you might be comfortable with.
Hint 3: Be A Little Cheap At First. Model Trains, HO Scale, allow you to spend a little or spend a lot. You’ll likely make mistakes early on or change your mind, so why spend a lot up front. You may find that you learn to enjoy operations, whereas you expected that building a sophisticated layout would be your passion. I like the great HO scale starter kits that you can find in your local hobby store or mass retailer. They give you a complete configuration with a relatively low up front cost.
Hint 4: Grow a little at a time. Don’t start with your dream layout on day 1. Instead, start small and build your equipment and layout as you make progress. In fact consider setting goals to complete before making your next purchase!
Hint 5: Don’t Forget Your Hobby Store. Your hobby store can help you learn, not just sell you equipment. Go to the store ready to absorb and create new ideas for your own layout. Spending time at a hobby store will help with you imagine new ideas for your own layout. And don’t forget that hobby stores often attract other hobbyists ready to share ideas and achievements.
Hint 6: Move Up to a Bench. Maybe you setup your first starter kit on the floor. Sure you can set up model trains, HO scale on the floor. But quickly figure out how to move that layout up to your new benchwork. The floor is a risky location for your new train. And it’s much easier to try track arrangements, operate, or just enjoy your layout when it’s up on a bench. You’ll be more comfortable on a chair than leaning over your set on the floor.
Hint 7: Work on only one or two projects at a time. Who among us hasn’t tried to take on too many projects at a time, only to never finish? The trick is to focus on only a project or two before moving on. Once you start a project, continue to completion before adding too many more projects. Finish that building, that scenery, or kit before taking on the next challenge.
Hint 8: Get started with a simple, stock track plan. Hint 1 was to learn from others. One of the best ways to leverage the work of others is to start with a published plan for your layout. By started with a basic plan, you can add interesting changes as your experience grows.
Hint 9: Have fun! That’s right, don’t forget that the point of model trains, HO scale or whichever scale you choose, is a fun and enjoyable hobby. And remember that cliché, when your model train serves you lemons, make some lemonade (my interpretation). Smile, have fun, and roll with it as your model train experience grows.
I hope sharing these hints helps you, as it has helped me with my own experiences. Best of luck creating your own fantastic model train experience.
